I Walk for My Mom

In September 1995, my mom, Jane, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I was 12, and, sadly, I don't have any vivid memories of her from before that time, when she was able to run, bike and swim. But I've seen photos, and heard stories. In high school, she was a lifeguard and baton-twirler. In college, she was a drummer. In her 20s, she was the head nurse on a hospital floor in Rochester.

The disease hasn't changed who she is, but it's changed what she can do.

She is an amazing, strong woman, and I love her so much. I believe most of who I am today came from who she is. She has done a great job, in my opinion, of accepting the disease and then fighting it every day.

In a way, our entire family and her (amazing!) friends have become caretakers, helping her with walking and driving. Through it all, I've learned a lot about patience and planning ahead.

We're so happy that she's still on her feet most of the time. And glad that she can join us on walks or trips to the mall in her wheelchair.

My mom's doctor is really excited about the research that has been done lately. There is a new drug that is very promising and we hope it starts trials soon (this year), and I hope that my mom might be able to be a part of that.

I love my mom so much and I want her to be able to walk again.

We keep praying for the miracle.

For the past five years, my family has walked in the MS Walk together as Team Plain Jane. This year's event is next weekend. If you're in the Des Moines area, I invite you to come walk with us!

Eric and I are donating $100 and using our company match to double our gift.

Would you consider making a donation to the National MS Society in honor of my mom?
